Dean Wood is a welcoming and picturesque golf club set in the heart of Lancashire, between the rural villages of Upholland and Orrell.
The course offers golfers of all standards, the chance to sample as quoted in the AA golfing guide, "One of the jewels of Lancashire's inland courses".
Club History
On Wednesday January 4th 1922, a meeting took place in the Council Offices of Orrell, where it was resolved after considerable discussion that a golf club be formed and that it should be known as the 'Dean Wood Golf Club'.
Later meetings took place in the Abbey Lakes Hotel and the Stag Inn. The annual subscriptions for Dean Wood Golf Club were initially £2 for men and £1 for ladies.
Mr R.O. ('Sporty') Hall was the Chairman of the first meeting, and susequently became the first Captain of the Club.
During the early days of the club, play started from the present 13th hole finishing nine holes later at the present 12th hole, with what must have then been a really nerve-wracking final drive.
In 1932 having aquired more land, Mr James Braid the famous five times Open Champion, was commissioned to design an additional nine holes. These are now the current front nine holes. It is said, that Mr Braid saved the life of the crucial oak tree on the 2nd hole, now known as 'Braid's Tree'.
Today, as well as the members competitions throughout the year, Dean Wood also hold several
to which visitors return time and again.
